November Empties

I'm a little frustrated in writing this post, because it's my second time doing so. I don't know what trick Blogger decided to pull on me, but I somehow managed to delete the completed post. Well, I guess I can practice my writing skills by starting again. Anyways, I hope everyone who celebrates had a great Thanksgiving. Here we are at the end of November, and I can't believe next time I'm doing an empties post, it will be 2014! In the meantime, winter in the midwest truly has me understanding why dry skin is something to fear. Most of the products in this post are moisturizers, because I've been pretty obsessive about keeping my skin hydrated. And of course, there's also a couple other miscellaneous favorites.

Protect and soothe with Graydon Clinical Luxury creams

Today I'm talking about two dreamy creams from a Canadian company called Graydon Clinical Luxury. Simply named Sun Cream and The Putty, these multitasking moisturizers have quickly become some of my cold weather favorites. Both of these products have beautiful ingredients lists that make them exceptional choices for winter skincare.

An everyday face

It's been way too long since I've shared what's in my current rotation makeup products, so it's time to show you what I've been reaching for on a daily basis. I definitely like to wear more than a barely there makeup look, but still lean towards neutral colors and light finishes. I don't want to look like I belong in a nightclub rather than a biology lab, you know? Here's my go-to everyday look for the past month or so.

Frangipani Shea Butter Softening Lotion

It's getting to that time of year when we all start to complain about winter skincare woes. To state the obvious, it's cold out and all across the northern hemisphere, skin is getting drier. When it gets below freezing, do I reach for water-based lotions? No! It's butters, balms and oils all the way. One of my current favorites in the butter category is Frangipani Shea Butter Softening Lotion ($21 for 1.5 oz). It's a multitasking whipped shea butter cream can be used on the face, hands, or anywhere else that needs some extra hydration.

Marie Veronique Organics Everyday Coverage SPF 30

Even as we approach some of the coldest months of the year, I still reach for my SPF everyday. The sun can still damage your skin in the winter, especially because light rays reflect off of the snow. One of my new favorite sunscreen products is Marie Veronique Organics' Everyday Coverage SPF 30 ($40 for 2 oz). I just love products that multitask, and this amazing tinted facial moisturizer protects and perfects at the same time.

Tag: Green Beauty Characters

Thanks to Ria for making this snazzy image to share.
I was recently tagged by lovely fellow bloggers Alexis from The Green Beauty Bunny and Kasey from Plein Vanity to do the "Green Beauty Characters" tag, which was originally started on Life in Blush. I'm not sure exactly sure what ties all these questions together, but this tag has a fun and eclectic mix of topics: everything from beauty products T.V. shows. I tag Vivi from Eco Beauty Secrets, Paula from Naturally Paula, Audriana from True Beauty by Nature, Brianna from iluvjesse444, and anyone else who wants to join in! Without further ado, here's the questions:

Seabuckthorn Fruit Oil from The Seabuckthorn Company

Seabuckthorn Oil has everywhere in the natural beauty world as of late, and it's easy to see why. The seabuckthorn berry is a nutrient rich fruit that boasts a wide range skincare benefits. Oil can come from the seed or the fruit of the seabuckthorn, and both types offer their own unique set of advantages. I was drawn to the fruit oil for its impressive nutrient profile that makes it particularly suited for healing damaged skin. Oil from the fruit is vibrant yellow orange color due to its richness in cartenoid pigments, and is perhaps slightly less common than the seed oil in skincare products. I knew I had to give the fruit oil a try, and where better to find it than The Seabuckthorn Company, whose oils come straight from the origin in Peachland, British Columbia?

Nourish Organic Fresh Fig Deodorant

I've made my way through Nourish Organic's body butter, hand soap, body wash and body lotion. Now it's time to talk about their last body care product: the Organic Deodorant. This is a solid stick deodorant that boasts fantastic organic moisturizers like coconut oil, cocoa seed butter and shea butter. And it does not contain that ingredient that seems to irritate so many of us -- baking soda. Instead, it keeps pits stink-free with a combination of cornstarch and plant enzymes. This gentle combination is great for sensitive skin, and surprisingly, it actually works pretty well. Not to mention, the fresh fig scent is so delicious and fruity.

Better Botanicals Jojoba Clarifying Scrub

Many times, I've mentioned my love for clay masks, especially bentonite clay (a.k.a. Aztec Secret). Something about that army green ingredient is so soothing for breakouts. Mixing up your own clay mask is fun and all, but sometimes I just love the convenience of something that is already ready to go, and that's when I reach for Better Botanicals' Jojoba Clarifying Scrub ($18.99 for 3.25 oz).

New from Deep Steep: the Indulgence line

Like many natural beauty bloggers, I have caught the Deep Steep bug. Who can resist a natural and organic line that has nourishing formulations, fun scents, and an amazing price point? As if that weren't enough, now there's the new Deep Steep Indulgence line. The new products are similar Deep Steep's original products: there's a foaming hand wash, a body wash, a body lotion. There's also something new: a body cream.  Like all Deep Steep products, these are formulated with great natural ingredients like aloe vera juice, shea butter and natural oils. But the indulgence line in also enhanced with antioxidant-rich extracts of A├žai, Goji Berry, Yumberry and Maqui Fruit. I put the hand wash and whipped body cream to the test:

Weleda Citrus Deodorant

Natural deodorant, along with mascara, is one of the most tricky items to transition over for those going au naturale. Lots of natural products just don't work, and many can also create uncomfortable skin irritations. On top of that, since everyone's body chemistry is different, what works for one person might not work for another. There probably just isn't one holy grail item that will work for everyone.

Nourish Organic Body Lotions: Fresh Fig and Spiced Citrus

Today's product is a real rarity. It's not all that uncommon to see a USDA Certified Organic lip balm or natural soap, but a truly organic body lotion? That's really something different, and that's exactly what Nourish Organic Body Lotion ($11.99 for 8 oz) is. To meet these strict standards, this lotion contains almost all organic ingredients, no preservatives, no emulsifying wax, no petroleum byproducts, no synthetics, no whatever else you're likely trying to avoid. That's pretty impressive. The one catch is that alcohol is used in place of a preservative, and is high up on the ingredients.

Pure Anada Pressed Mineral Foundation: a pressed powder for the purists

The Pure Anada Pressed Mineral Foundation is $19.50. The paper compact is sold separately for $5.95.
How often do you get excited about a natural pressed makeup product, only to discover it contains a bunch of binders that you would rather avoid? Well, for me at least, it happens a lot! It's hard to formulate truly natural pressed products, so most natural companies just don't make them, or compromise on ingredients. So I was pretty darn excited to find Pure Anada Pressed Mineral Foundation ($19.50) on Open Sky. This powder foundation has buildable coverage, a natural finish, and most importantly, it contains simple, non-pore clogging ingredients.

Frangipani Grapefruit Body Oil: five ingredient perfection

If you're a regular reader of my blog, you may have noticed that I have a strong tendency towards all things sweet and fruity. Even when it's completely out of season, and most tend towards warmer, spicier scents, I'll take citrus! Lately I've been loving Frangipani Grapefruit Body Oil ($24.50 for 8 oz), which delivers a fruity scent to satisfy my cravings in a more sophisticated, subtle way. We all know sometimes the best things are the simplest, and this generous-sized body oil contains only five all-natural ingredients: rice bran, jojoba, grapefruit, ylang ylang and vitamin E.
