February Empties

Compared to last month's massive stash of empties, this month was relatively tame. But I still did use up seven full sized products, which is pretty good! Most of these items are things that I have had around for a long time, and have finally finished off. I'm surprised I don't have more empty moisturizers, at the rate I've been needing them, but here's what I did go through:

On the go essentials

I think every beauty junkie enjoys spending a good chunk of time getting ready, so long as things aren't too hectic. Of course, sometimes there is no time at all, and you have to take everything with you on the go. You might be on a plane, a train, a car, a bus, maybe even a helicopter, a tram, a cable car or a gondola. It could happen! Here are my picks for portable products that can be whipped out at the drop of a hat, wherever you are going.

Spill it: come as you are beauty tag

I was recently tagged by Tina of Our Wonderlust to do the "Come As You Are" beauty tag.
Started by The Green Product Junkie, here is the premise:

The Going Green Tag

I was recently tagged by one of my favorite bloggers, Sugarpuffish, to do the "Going Green Tag." This tag was started by Rachel of All Natural Aspirations, and these questions cover how I got started, the best and worst parts of going green, and what tips I have to pass along. So if you want to know more about my path, read on!

Shea Terra sampling

Shea Terra has one of the largest and most intriguing product lines of any natural company that I have seen! They use many hard-to-find indigenous African ingredients in a diverse array of products that includes everything from mud-based shampoo to rare facial oils to effervescent bath soaks. And that's probably less than 1% of their products! With so many interesting items filled with traditional, nourishing ingredients, it's hard to know where to start. So I'll just talk about a couple that I'm enjoying.

Brija Cosmetics

Last year, one of the members of the green beauty community, Brianna of iluvjesse444, created her own line of makeup. She started off with loose mineral shadows, but quickly grew to include cream-based products including lip and eye colors. Her line, Brija Cosmetics, has fun themed collections based on T.V. shows and movies like The Grinch, Sherlock Holmes and The Powerpuff Girls. I took advantage of the Black Friday sale a couple months back, and picked up a motley crew of products from several of the collections.

Natural spot treatments, two ways

I've been quite focused on preventing acne in the past couple months, and I've been fairly successful. I do raw honey treatments, avoid dairy, limit sugar, take a probiotic, try not to stress out, do masque treatments, and use great skincare. But sometimes, even when I do everything right, a little eruption pops up on my face, and just doing something makes me feel better. There are two very different spot treatments that I reach for in these situations.

Quick tip: wash your brushes with bar soap

Thanks to my previously-oversized brush collection, I am quite experienced at washing brushes. Admittedly, I tend to just use whatever natural, low-fragranced soap I have around, but I do have a strong preference for bars over liquid.

Caldrea Body Oils

Last year Caldrea, the company that makes scent-centric household cleaning products, launched a body care line that includes a gorgeous selection of Body Oils*. It's always exciting to see widely available brands embracing such a natural beauty staple, especially when it's a thoughtful blend of nutrient-rich oils. I imagine this as a sort of perfect gateway product for someone reluctant to dip their toe into the world of body oils. They offer complex, but approachable fragrances, moisturizing yet absorbent texture, and are available in stores one is already familiar with. And of course the understated glass bottles will appeal to anyone with an eye for sleek design.

EO Organic Deodorants

I couple months ago, I wrote about a deodorant combination that has been working perfectly for me: Nourish's stick deodorant layered with Weleda's sprays. Weleda deodorants cost somewhere in the $9 range online, and are made of alcohol and essential oils. Since these alcohol-based sprays have been working well for me, I was curious to try EO's line of spray deodorants* ($4.19 for 4 oz) that are made with pretty much the same ingredients.

A new name

As you will probably notice right away, my blog has a new design and a new name. To explain why I've decided to make this change, I thought I would tell you how my blog name came to be in the first place.

Alaffia Africa's Secret Skin Cream

One of my goals this year is to use more products that contain fair trade ingredients, and one of the first products I have to talk about is Alaffia's Africa's Secret* ($13.99 for 2 oz or $24.99 for 4 oz). I have always loved this line for its affordable price point and its wide availability in health food stores. But beyond that, this company utilizes sustainable indigenous ingredients to increase gender equality and empower communities in Africa. You can learn more about what they do in this video. It's a company that is doing a lot of cool things, and there's many reasons to feel good about buying this brand!

#NoBuyJanuary wrap up, reflections, and what's next

No Buy January is officially over! My goal was to eliminate all unnecessary purchases, not just beauty products. So how did I do?

January favorites

As I mentioned in my recent green/beauty goals post, I am going to be starting a new feature on my blog: monthly favorites. This is no revolutionary concept by any means, but it gives me a new format to talk about all the things I'm loving in my current routine. Last year I spent a lot of time obsessing over skincare, but this month I have been fixated on makeup, and base products in particular.
